Genesee County new businesses face rough road for 2009; Some projects on hold, others continue

Construction continues on the Vehicle City Harley-Davidson store in Flint Township. The store, among the few new ones planned for the area in 2009, is expected to open in April.GENESEE COUNTY, Michigan -- Downtown Flint could be a leading business bright spot in 2009 as two big planned projects have been delayed elsewhere in the county and some retailers follow through with closings.
Construction on the Meijer store slated for Morrish Road near I-69 has been pushed back a year, Swartz Creek City Manager Paul Bueche said. Meijer opened stores in Davison Township and Birch Run in 2008.
And a spokesman for Menards, which opened a home improvement store in Vienna Township last year, said a planned site at the southwest corner of Court Street and Irish Road in Davison Township won't open in 2009.

• Sydney Helsel, a Marshall Greene Middle School eighth grader, of Clio, participated in the People to People World Leadership Forum in Washington, D.C.
The forums offer students a blend of specialized educational, leadership and cultural experiences through workshops, speakers and visits to significant memorials, museums and other sites.
Including the Brazilian Embassy, Gettysburg, the Smithsonian Museums and the Capitol Building.

DAVISON, Michigan -- Ever since a farmer found a woman's decomposing body near Blue Earth, Minn., almost 30 years ago, people in the tiny city wondered who she was and where she came from.
Today, there's still no answer, but there is a fresh effort to rule out the possibility that the dead woman is Paulette Jaster, a star basketball player and homecoming queen candidate from Davison High School who has been missing for nearly 30 years.
