Genesee County new businesses face rough road for 2009; Some projects on hold, others continue

by Melissa Burden | Flint Journal business columnist
    Sunday January 04, 2009, 3:17 AM

Construction continues on the Vehicle City Harley-Davidson store in Flint Township. The store, among the few new ones planned for the area in 2009, is expected to open in April.

GENESEE COUNTY, Michigan -- Downtown Flint could be a leading business bright spot in 2009 as two big planned projects have been delayed elsewhere in the county and some retailers follow through with closings.

Construction on the Meijer store slated for Morrish Road near I-69 has been pushed back a year, Swartz Creek City Manager Paul Bueche said. Meijer opened stores in Davison Township and Birch Run in 2008.

And a spokesman for Menards, which opened a home improvement store in Vienna Township last year, said a planned site at the southwest corner of Court Street and Irish Road in Davison Township won't open in 2009.
